China ranks as the second-largest supplier of CMOS image sensors globally.
China has entered the second-largest supply梯队 for CMOS image sensors globally.
According to the report by Yole (Yole Industry Research), in 2025, Sony's revenue from CMOS image sensors (CIS)
will approach half of the global market总额; China has surpassed South Korea and become the second-largest
region for CMOS image sensor supply, with companies such as Hawick Technology, Sijiewei, Geke Micro, and
Changguang Chenxin driving the growth of the local industry.
Automotive electronics remains the core strategic competition track for CMOS image sensor manufacturers:
Hawick Technology leads in this field, while Sony continuously increases its market share in high-resolution
advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) vehicle cameras and vehicle surround cameras markets.
Starting from 2026, the upward cycle of storage chips driven by the artificial intelligence industry will bring new
supply chain risks to the CMOS image sensor industry chain.
Yole stated that in 2025, the competitive landscape of the CMOS image sensor industry shows a clear
polarization: Sony, domestic Chinese manufacturers, and other overseas manufacturers form three major
echelons, and market differentiation has further intensified.
In 2025, Sony's market share increased significantly, with the core driving force for growth coming from the
high-end mobile phone imaging market, Apple supply chain orders, large optical size sensors, ultra-high
resolution chips, and advanced stacked chip architectures.
Samsung remains the world's second-largest CMOS image sensor manufacturer, but its annual revenue has
basically stagnated. The reason for this is that the high-end smartphone market is facing strong pressure from
Sony, while the mid-to-low-end market is being impacted by domestic Chinese manufacturers.
Hawick Technology achieved double-digit growth in revenue; Sijiewei is the fastest-growing manufacturer
among the leading companies, with product layouts covering mobile phones, security, vehicle, and
consumer electronics, and continuous expansion of the market.
In contrast, ON Semiconductor's performance has declined due to intensified competition in the automotive
market; SK Hynix has continuously contracted the CMOS image sensor business, shifting its R&D and
production resources to the storage main business.
Yole analyst Anas Chakarak pointed out: "The rise of China's CMOS image sensor industry is driven by market
demand and supply chain autonomy. Domestic CIS manufacturers, relying on domestic wafer foundry capacity,
overseas manufacturing channels, and deepening cooperation with domestic camera module enterprises,
have comprehensively optimized their competitiveness in cost control, product certification, and new product
launch cycles."
The competitive landscape in each downstream application track is gradually becoming differentiated, and the
manufacturer landscape in different market segments shows significant differences:
Mobile phone market: Sony leads with an 57% share, significantly ahead of Samsung; Hawick, Sijiewei,
Geke Micro, and STMicroelectronics focus on the differentiated market demands of mobile phone sub-
segments.
Office productivity equipment: Sony maintains its leading position, but the demand for computers, tablets,
and network cameras in the post-pandemic era has returned to normal, and the industry growth space is
limited.
Consumer photography equipment: The market is highly concentrated on Sony and Canon; the intelligent IoT
track is dominated by Hawick, Geke Micro, Sijiewei, Samsung, and Chi-Jing Optoelectronics.
The domestic improvement of the industry chain complementation, combined with the differentiated layout of
each manufacturer, highlights the three core competitive elements: cost advantage, miniaturized chip
solutions, and connection with domestic original equipment manufacturers (OEM) channels.
Security surveillance track: The widespread multi-camera solution for cameras drives market expansion, and
the track is highly fragmented; Sijiewei and Hawick Technology occupy the leading positions in the industry.
Industrial vision track: Sony maintains a dominant position; ON Semiconductor, Terada, Changguang
Chenxin, and Hamamatsu Photonics have firmly occupied core positions in the high-performance, long-life
industrial sensor field. At the same time, potential risks in the industry are gradually emerging: The artificial
intelligence industry has given rise to a large amount of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced DRAM
demand. The production capacity of storage chips has tightened and prices have continued to rise. Storage
manufacturers prioritize the production capacity of high-margin storage orders.
The allocation of wafer production capacity, the cost of raw materials for logic/storage chips, the design of
stacked chip architectures, on-chip cache, and the research and development planning of camera modules, etc.,
will all be indirectly impacted by the shortage of storage production capacity, thereby affecting the development
of CMOS image sensor industries.
