Microchip and Marelli jointly demonstrated ASA Motion Link, an open automotive-grade video link.

On September 3rd, Microchip Technology and Marelli jointly released a demonstration solution for in-vehicle display connectivity based on ASA Motion Link

 (ASA-ML). This solution directly transmits the graphics and video generated by the central computer to the in-vehicle display terminal via a standardized 

SerDes link. ASA-ML is an open automotive video/SerDes communication standard defined by the Automotive SerDes Alliance (ASA), maintained by a global 

alliance consisting of OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, and semiconductor manufacturers. Microchip is a founding member of ASA and has verified multi-source 

interoperability on the camera side. This collaboration extends ASA-ML to the display side.


In the joint demonstration solution, the central computing side uses the Microchip VS7000 ASA-ML chipset group to process and send standardized video 

streams. Marelli configures and optimizes the ASA-ML deserializer on the display side to ensure that the display terminal can directly decode, receive, and 

synchronize the display of camera, navigation map, infotainment, and vehicle control images from the central computing. In terms of link indicators, the 

solution supports a maximum data rate of 16 Gbps. It includes built-in link layer authentication and encryption, Time Division Duplex (TDD), simplified forward

 error correction (FEC), and robust transmission against electromagnetic noise. The solution also reserves a path for migration to an Ethernet-centric in-vehicle

 network at the architectural level.


The value points presented in the joint release are simplifying the electronic architecture of the display side, reducing system costs, and increasing supplier 

flexibility. Kelei Shen, the president of Marelli Electronics, in the release, positioned this collaboration as "representing the integrator role in the SDV era," 

emphasizing that Marelli integrates technologies from multiple partners into solutions available to OEMs. Kevin So, the vice president of Microchip's 

Communications Business Unit, views ASA-ML as "a key mechanism to reduce reliance on proprietary technologies." Both parties place "interoperability" in 

the same position in their value proposition - video streams allow multiple manufacturers to access from the protocol layer, rather than having a single 

semiconductor manufacturer provide an end-to-end solution. 


ASA-ML brings the video channel back from a "private protocol" to an "open protocol," allowing OEMs to source from multiple Tier 1 and semiconductor 

manufacturers, and Tier 1s to focus more on display modules, screens, and integration of electronic architectures, among other differentiated aspects.
