MR collaborates with Siemens to jointly develop solid-state transformers, laying a reliable power foundation for AI data centers

Recently, the global leader in power control, German Rheinhausen Group (hereinafter referred to as MR), and Siemens are jointly developing a dedicated 

transformer to meet the increasing power demand in the AI era. Through strategic cooperation, the two parties are jointly promoting the innovation of 

power supply solutions for AI data centers and jointly developing solid-state transformers (SST), and plan to achieve mass production in the future.


Data centers providing computing power for artificial intelligence are one of the most demanding power users: extreme load spikes within seconds can 

affect servers, storage systems, and cooling systems, thereby reducing the performance of data centers and even causing power outages. As key system 

equipment, transformers and their control systems have become strategic elements.


"When dynamic response capabilities and availability become the most important indicators for measuring economic efficiency, as a leading manufacturer 

of voltage regulation technology worldwide, we can fully leverage our own advantages. With deep expertise in power electronics, we are very much 

looking forward to once again collaborating with long-term partner Siemens to jointly develop." Wilfried Breuer, the managing director and spokesperson 

of the executive management of MR, said.


Dual-Power Drive: Deep Integration of Core Technology and System Integration Capability


MR has brought profound accumulation and expertise in voltage regulation, power electronics, power supply solutions, and digitalization to the 

collaboration. These capabilities are the core foundation for SST to achieve high dynamic response and active control. Siemens, on the other hand, 

integrates strong capabilities in grid connection, power supply solutions, power conversion, protection and control, and digitalization, responsible for the 

system integration, grid compatibility, and engineering implementation of SST for global deployment. The technical strengths of both parties complement 

each other: MR provides the core "active control heart", and Siemens embeds it into the complete energy system architecture, jointly delivering the next-

generation energy system for AI data centers.


Stephan May, the Chief Executive Officer of Siemens' Electrification and Automation Business, said: "The combination of Siemens' and MR's technical 

strengths will shape the future of power supply solutions for AI data centers worldwide. In these large-scale, high-energy-consuming facilities, SST plays a 

crucial role. They can achieve higher efficiency, direct DC conversion from the grid to the cabinet, and significantly reduce the floor space."


Solid-state Transformer (SST): Supplementing Rather Than Replacing Traditional Transformers


Solid-state transformer (SST) is an innovative solution that combines traditional transformer technology with modern power electronics and digital control. 

It can monitor and actively control current flow in real time, achieving highly flexible power supply under high power density, and coping with typical 

extreme load fluctuations in modern AI data centers.


However, at present, SST does not replace traditional transformers with load tap changers but serves as a supplement in certain high-demand applications. 

The two have clear positioning: Transformers and load tap changers reliably and efficiently transmit and regulate current within a fixed range; while SST 

can actively and dynamically control the mode of current transmission.
