NXP's new MCX A5 MCU simplifies industrial security connections
The integrated 10BASE-T1S Ethernet enables manufacturers to extend IP-based connections deeper into industrial systems, connecting more sensors,
actuators, and controllers, while significantly reducing system costs and complexity. The topology discovery function automatically identifies and maps
connected devices, enhancing network visualization and simplifying deployment processes. The MCX A5 series thus converts more devices into accessible
real-time data sources for applications such as analysis, automation, and industrial edge AI.
Significance
According to Omdia, the integration of artificial intelligence and edge processing is accelerating its application in industrial automation scenarios. This
trend indicates that manufacturers are increasingly enhancing operational intelligence through device networking. However, a large number of industrial
edge devices are still not connected or still rely on traditional connection methods such as RS-232 and RS-485, limiting the acquisition of real-time
operational data and becoming a major bottleneck for achieving effective automation.
Charles Dachs, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Security Edge Division at NXP, stated: "Without real-time data access capabilities,
industrial edge AI cannot reach its full potential. This requires developers to have expertise in networking, security, software, and long product lifecycle
management. Therefore, we are continuously investing in multiple solutions across our product portfolio, and the MCX A5 series is one of them, aiming to
help customers securely connect more devices, simplify software development processes, and unlock the trusted data required for intelligent edge
applications."
Paolo Faraldi, Chief Technology Officer of CAREL, said: "The future of industrial AI depends on the acquisition of trusted data, which requires seamless
coordination of connectivity, cybersecurity, and AI. The MCX A5 series is the innovative solution we need for the future, combining advanced Ethernet
connectivity with next-generation security technologies such as post-quantum cryptography (PQC), and integrating a hardware trust root based on PQC,
covering secure boot, secure firmware updates, secure proof, and secure debugging identity verification. Some models also support the Rust programming
language, enabling developers to adopt modern software development practices with memory safety. The MCX A5 series is supported by the NXP
MCUXpresso software and tool ecosystem, including the MCUXpresso SDK with long-term support (LTS) versions, development tools, middleware, and
security-enabled components."
More Details
The MCX A5 series is based on the Arm® Cortex®-M33 core, with a clock frequency up to 240 MHz. It integrates a 10BASE-T1S digital PHY, supporting
compact, low-cost distributed industrial node multi-point Ethernet networks, reducing the number of components required for industrial connections, and
lowering costs and design complexity.
The MCX A5 series is designed for long product lifecycles, featuring PSA Certified Level 3 security mechanisms and supporting post-quantum cryptography
(PQC). It includes a hardware trust root based on PQC, covering secure boot, secure firmware updates, secure proof, and secure debugging identity
verification. Some models also support the Rust programming language, enabling developers to adopt modern software development practices with
memory safety. The MCX A5 series is supported by the NXP MCUXpresso software and tool ecosystem, including the MCUXpresso SDK with long-term
support (LTS) versions, development tools, middleware, and security-enabled components. Meanwhile, this series also supports Zephyr RTOS. Developers
can freely choose between commercial or open-source software environments to obtain long-term product maintenance and security updates. These
capabilities jointly help developers build and maintain secure connected products, and they can calmly cope with the evolving cybersecurity requirements,
including the various regulations proposed by the European "Cyber Resilience Act".
The MCX A5 series is used in conjunction with the NXP TJF1410 10BASE-T1S PMD transceiver, forming a complete single-pair Ethernet (SPE) solution,
suitable for industrial and building automation and other application scenarios. The TJF1410 serves as the analog front end of the MCX A5 integrated
digital PHY. The TJF1410 has been optimized for 10BASE-T1S networks that comply with the IEEE 802.3cg standard, complementing the integrated digital
PHY of the MCX A5, simplifying system design and reducing bill of materials costs, and is suitable for industrial automation, building automation, energy
infrastructure, and other distributed edge applications.
The MCX A5 series provides 2MB flash memory, 640KB RAM, and a variety of rich connection interfaces such as UART, I²C, I3C, SPI, CAN FD, high-speed
USB, and FlexIO, offering flexibility to developers. In addition to the FRDM development board, the MCX A5 series also receives comprehensive support
from the MCUXpresso development ecosystem, including Rust language support, comprehensive SDK, Visual Studio Code integration, and LTS software
versions.
