STMicroelectronics has launched a new type of electrically isolated gate driver
On August 7, 2026, China - STMicroelectronics has expanded its STGAP3S gate driver series. This series features
an enhanced electrical isolation design to enhance reliability. The newly launched product is an efficient and cost
-effective 3A driver capable of handling circuits requiring lower drive currents. The new product, STGAP3S3S, has
been optimized for silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFETs, while STGAP3S3IF is suitable for IGBTs.
All STGAP3S drivers can operate in high-voltage bus circuits up to 1200V, suitable for applications such as power
factor correction (PFC), power supplies, DC/DC converters, and inverters. International safety and insulation
certification, including UL 1577 and IEC 60747-17, independently verifies its strong isolation performance, safe
operation capabilities, and long-term reliability at high voltages. Typical applications include charging stations,
energy storage systems (ESS), solar inverters, industrial electric vehicles such as forklifts, induction heating
equipment, and general drives, pumps, and fans.
STMicroelectronics' advanced enhanced insulation isolation technology protects power-level circuits from up to
9.6kV transient disturbances and ensures up to 200V/ns common-mode transient immunity (CMTI). This series
includes three drive capability versions, each providing up to 10A, 6A, and the newly added 3A drive capabilities,
with optimized models for IGBTs and silicon carbide MOSFETs.
The new STGAP3S3 series has 3A drive capability and integrates active Miller clamp function, including clamping
the MOSFET, to prevent undesired inductive conduction of the power switch and avoid direct current. The
integrated MOSFET can save PCB space, simplify circuit design, and reduce bill of materials costs, while still
providing appropriate clamp performance at up to 3A gate drive conditions. The 6A STGAP3S6 and 10A
STGAP3SX series include pre-drivers for external MOSFETs, providing greater flexibility for optimizing clamp
speed in high gate drive current systems.
All STGAP3S drivers have diagnostic pins to indicate whether saturation protection, under-voltage lockout (UVLO),
and overheating shutdown are activated. The drivers support negative gate voltages, further enhancing
suppression of misconduction and protecting the device during fault shutdown, ensuring robust switching and
no ringing during normal shutdown.
Each STGAP3S driver comes with an evaluation board, including the latest 3A model. These two evaluation boards
, EVLSTGAP3S3S and EVLSTGAP3S3IF, are half-bridge boards, pre-configured with protection functions and
providing test points and diagnostic LEDs to assist in development.
The complete STGAP3S series is now in mass production and can be used to drive IGBTs and silicon carbide
MOSFETs, including STGAP3S3, STGAP3S6, and STGAP3SX series.
