Stellar P3E: An automotive microcontroller equipped with artificial intelligence acceleration function, empowering intelligent perception and control execution for electric vehicles
STMicroelectronics has launched its first automotive microcontroller with integrated artificial intelligence acceleration capabilities, creating a vehicle-grade edge intelligence core.
The development of software-defined vehicles has placed greater demands on the computing capabilities at the edge. STMicroelectronics has made a significant announcement with the launch of Stellar P3E (Stellar P3E), which is the company's first automotive microcontroller that integrates artificial intelligence acceleration capabilities. This device is specifically designed for real-time artificial intelligence processing in vehicles, helping automakers integrate multiple functions into a single electronic control unit.
The core is equipped with our self-developed neural acceleration engine, and the technological breakthrough has reshaped the industry landscape.
The core of Stellar P3E is the ST Neural-ART Accelerator™ - an embedded neural network accelerator directly integrated into the microcontroller. This accelerator adopts a data flow architecture specifically designed for AI processing, enabling the controller to complete inference operations in microseconds and achieving an energy efficiency improvement of up to 30 times compared to the standard microcontroller core. This design enables low-power, all-day AI operation without the need for additional hardware, providing support for intelligent perception and virtual sensor functions.
This built-in artificial intelligence function can empower applications such as predictive maintenance and real-time perception; in electric vehicles, it can also effectively enhance charging efficiency and speed. Automakers can also add various functions to vehicles during the production stage or after delivery by using this function. By running artificial intelligence models locally on microcontrollers, automakers can reduce the need for additional sensors, control modules, and wiring arrangements, while also lowering the complexity of system integration.
The Stellar P3E is specifically designed for a multi-instrumentation electronic control unit. Car manufacturers do not need to equip separate controllers for different functions. They can integrate various functions into a single system, thereby reducing costs, lightening the vehicle weight and simplifying the design process.
To meet the future upgrade and iteration requirements of the software, this microcontroller integrates an extended memory (xMemory) - a non-volatile memory based on phase-change storage technology. Its storage density is twice that of standard embedded flash memory, and it has passed the automotive-grade certification. It can store more software and support online upgrades without the need to replace the hardware.
